What is the difference between a Periodontist & General Dentist?

Have you been informed by your dentist that you are in need of a Periodontist? Are you specifically looking for a Periodontist in the Willow Grove area to help with your gum disease? Look no further, as Dr. Barry P. Levin, DMD, PC is a Diplomat of The American Board of Periodontology, and the area’s leading expert in dental implants & Periodontics.

While prepping for your visit to Dr. Levin’s office, it is nice to know the main differences between a Periodontist and a General Dentist, so that you understand why your situation requires a specialist. In the simplest terms, a dentist treats the teeth, gums, and other areas of the mouth while a periodontist only treats the gums and the bone supporting the teeth. The periodontist typically sees severe, complex cases that require a specialist rather than having the patient see a general dentist. Both doctors must attend Dental School after earning an undergraduate degree. While Dental school is a four-year program; periodontists must complete the same program, plus 3 additional years of post doctoral training.

Effects of Gum Disease On the Body

Visiting a periodontist can help you avoid serious health problems. If you have experienced bleeding while eating or brushing, bad breath, loose teeth, gum recession, gangrene, heart disease, diabetes, osteopenia or osteoporosis it is important that you schedule your appointment with Dr. Barry Levin, your local periodontist as soon as possible.

Before initiating any dental treatment, Dr. Levin will examine the gums, jawbone, and general condition of the teeth. Once your examination is complete, a plan of action will be implemented to help with your periodontal disease. If you allow your periodontal disease to get out of hand, you could begin to lose your teeth and incur serious health issues.
