Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

The foundation of a healthy smile is to ensure regular brushing each morning and evening. Using a soft bristled toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride can greatly reduce the risk of tartar and plaque buildup that leads to tooth decay and a less than healthy smile.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Eating a well-balanced diet that’s rich in fruits, veggies, dairy, and lean protein can give you the vitamins and nutrients your body needs to maintain strong teeth and a healthy smile. 

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is not only good for overall health, but it helps stimulate the saliva in your mouth, which helps keep your teeth clean and washes away harmful bacteria and food particles that cause tartar to build up. 

Eat Less Sugar

Sugar is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to tooth decay.  Sugar turns into acid that will eat away at the teeth’s enamel. This can cause cavities, pain, bad breath, and the need for root canals and extractions. Don’t worry, you can still enjoy the occasional sweet treat- just don’t forget to brush afterward!

Use Teeth Only for Chewing

It may sound redundant, but most of us are probably guilty of using our teeth for things other than chewing food. Some of us may use our teeth to open packages, take shells off of nuts, or even chew our fingernails. These habits are big no-nos if you are looking to maintain a healthy smile. Don’t risk chipping, cracking, or splitting your teeth just to make things a bit easier. Also, avoid using objects other than a toothbrush or dental floss to dislodge food that’s become stuck in your teeth. 

Schedule Regular Dental Exams

While all of the above tips are great for helping you maintain proper oral hygiene and a healthy smile, nothing can replace regular dental exams. It’s recommended that healthy adults have two check-ups a year. This allows the dentist to perform a thorough examination, take X-rays, and do an in-depth dental cleaning. This will ensure your teeth are kept free of plaque and any potential issues can be treated promptly.
