How to Prevent Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an incredibly common disorder that affects millions of Americans. Not only can it ruin your smile, but it has also been linked to multiple health problems. The damage can be reversible, but prevention is the best way to take care of your smile. Find out how to prevent periodontal disease with these easy tips.

1. Use Floss

It can be challenging to add another task to your daily routine, but flossing is one of the best ways to prevent periodontal disease. Floss can remove plaque that a toothbrush simply can’t reach, decreasing your risk of developing tooth decay. You only need to floss once a day, although you can repeat the process after eating if you wish. You can use traditional floss, a power flosser, or disposable flossers.

2. Stop Smoking

According to the CDC, smoking has been linked to the evolution of gum disease. Smokers are twice as likely to be diagnosed with gum disease, and many treatments are less effective for people who smoke. In addition, smoker’s gums tend  to heal more slowly than non-smokers.  This also goes for tobacco products like chewing tobacco and cigars. If you already smoke, do your best to quit, and if you don’t, try to avoid cigarettes altogether.

3. Keep Up with Your Oral Hygiene

Your oral hygiene routine doesn’t just keep your smile white and bright – it also stops the spread of periodontal disease. Brushing your teeth helps to clear your smile of any food or bacteria that has collected throughout your day. Without brushing, this food material can turn into tooth decay and gum disease. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste that has been approved by the American Dental Association (ADA), and replace your toothbrush once every 3 to 4 months.

4. Get Regular Teeth Cleanings

Any dentist would agree that brushing and flossing are essential to your oral health, but regular teeth cleanings at the office of Barry Levin DMD are equally important. Only professional care can remove the tartar that builds up in the months between your visits. Your dental hygienist can also inspect your smile for warning signs of gingivitis, the early stage of periodontal disease, and recommend the best course of treatment. This damage is often reversible, especially when gum disease is detected early on. Most patients should visit us for a professional teeth cleaning once every six months, or approximately twice a year.

5.  Supplement Your Routine

In addition to brushing and flossing, supplemental products like mouthwash and fluoride treatments can help stave off periodontal disease. Many mouthwashes contain ingredients that eliminate plaque-causing bacteria, and fluoride has been shown to decrease the risk of a gum disease diagnosis. Dr. Levin can evaluate your smile and help you choose the optimal products for your oral health needs.
