Halitosis is a medical term for having bad breath. However, this type of bad breath does not come from eating a lot of garlic. When your breath routinely smells awful, there might be something more serious under the surface. If you are concerned about your oral health for any reason, then see a dentist promptly to get your teeth and gums checked out.

Understanding Halitosis

What Causes It?

Numerous different factors can result in chronic bad breath. Food particles can get caught between teeth, which leave behind an odor when they are stuck there for a lengthy period of time. Gum disease is another big culprit that is often behind halitosis. If your bad breath is accompanied by bleeding gums and receding gum tissue, then you likely have periodontal disease.

People who frequently smoke are far more susceptible to developing chronic bad breath than individuals who do not. The reason is that tobacco promotes the growth of bacteria in the mouth. Bad breath could also be a symptom of having a sinus or throat infection. You may also have digestive problems such as gastrointestinal reflux.

How Can It Be Eliminated?

If you are self-conscious about the way your breath smells, then there are a few things you can do about it. First, you should brush and floss your teeth often. You should be brushing twice a day, so increase frequency if you are falling short. Additionally, you should be seeing a dental professional at least twice a year. If it has been a while since your last checkup, then you should schedule one soon to see how well your teeth and gums are holding up. Some other tips include:

  • Chewing sugarless gum
  • Scraping your tongue
  • Avoiding certain foods
  • Using antibacterial mouthwash

Halitosis can be embarrassing, especially if you have a date or job interview coming up. See a dentist regularly so that you always know what is going on inside your mouth.
