Understanding the Difference Between Crowns and Bridges

Your smile is the key to confidence. However, a few missing teeth or a chipped tooth can make you want to stop talking to people because you feel so self-conscious. Crowns and bridges are exceptional choices to restore your smile, but they serve different purposes.

Here’s a guide to help you understand how crowns and bridges work, and which one makes the most sense for you depending on the situation.

Dental Crown

A dental crown is a popular procedure for many who want to restore their smile or function. Missing teeth, especially back teeth, can make chewing or speaking properly hard. However, a crown can instantly regain function.

Crowns can also be used on front teeth. Dental crowns are usually made of porcelain or ceramic to ensure they match the rest of your teeth, ensuring they aren’t noticeable. Back teeth may be covered with a metal crown called a cap.

Additionally, a dental crown is a simple dental process that can be completed in one office visit. Crowns can also be designed to match your teeth.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is another fantastic option. Dental bridges can help replace missing teeth. Prep for a dental bridge requires more care than dental crown prep. For a dental bridge, a crown is typically placed on both teeth on either side of the missing tooth. The bridge, a fake tooth or teeth, is then fixed to the dental crowns to keep it in place, bridging the gap between teeth.

Bridges are designed to replace missing teeth. This process doesn’t work if you want to preserve your natural teeth or improve their appearance. Individuals with one or two bad teeth may choose to have those teeth pulled and replaced with a bridge to enhance their smile’s appearance or prevent further decay. The teeth on either side of the gap must be healthy for this to be an option. However, bridges are an excellent option for individuals who don’t want or qualify for dental implants.

Crowns vs. Bridges

Crowns are available in metal, porcelain, or ceramic materials to make your smile beautiful. They are common if someone has chipped teeth or a large amount of the tooth needs to be drilled away due to a cavity. Crowns are frequently used to cover a root canal. Bridges are specially designed for missing teeth but can be used if someone needs to have a few teeth pulled.
